Glamping & Holiday Cottages near Devon
Middle Stone Farm is about 5 miles from the Devon border, so we're perfectly placed to explore the wonderful North Devon coast, the rolling hills of mid Devon and the Devon south coast isn't too far away either.
North Devon: The picturesque villages of Lynton & Lynmouth are lovely, also known as Little Switzerland, the cliff railway is the highest and steepest fully water-powered railway in the world. The Valley of the Rocks is next door, definitely worth visiting, you can walk a bit of the South West Coast Path here, it feels very otherworldly with wild goats, Heddon's Mouth and Watersmeet National Trust, are also nearby, you could see all these places in a day if you start early! For family attractions there's The Big Sheep, If you want to surf, the best North Devon beaches, are Croyde, Saunton Sands, Putsborough and Woollacombe. Check the tide times before heading over there, Saunton is best in our opinion whether the tide is high or low.
Mid Devon: Think rolling hills, lots of farms and pretty country lanes. We tend to pass on through, but if you'd like to stop there are several good family attractions like The Bear Trail - brilliant fun for all the family, a muddy assault course, the cafe does good wood fired pizzas and coffee and there are showers there too! The Donkey Sanctuary is well worth visiting, with lots of lovely donkeys to stroke and admire, they also have a great maze! Quadworld isn't my cup of tea, but my boys love it! Knightshayes Court near Tiverton is a great National Trust too.
South Devon: Although it's pretty, it is much, much busier in South Devon than it is with us in West Somerset. Personally we avoid it in the peak months, and head over there outside the school holidays when it's a bit quieter. Darts Farm and nearby Topsham are lovely, Exeter is a great city to explore with a good museum. Dartmoor has great walks and is very famous. Then the beaches of Beer, Branscombe, Budleigh Salterton (our favourite) are all lovely, but can be really busy, so go early if you want a parking space!
